Growing Instructions
Broccoli is a cool-weather crop that grows best during the spring and fall seasons. Sow the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the average last frost date. Seedlings will grow best in cool conditions of 65-70°F. Keep the seeds moist, not wet. Thin the plants to the strongest seedling. After the seedlings have developed 3-4 true leaves, begin fertilizing them every 7-10 days with a liquid fertilizer diluted by 1/4 the required amount. Transplant the seedlings when they are 4-6 weeks old, and they have grown 4-5 true leaves. Harden off the seedlings before transplanting. Transplant outdoors 18-24” apart in rows 24-30” apart.
Sow the seeds outdoors 2-3 weeks before your last frost date, or as soon as the soil can be worked. The seeds should be planted 1/4” deep and 3” apart. Plant in an area of the garden that receives at least 6 hours of full sunlight in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the plants to help suppress weeds, maintain moisture and keep the roots cool. Harvest while the buds are green and tightly closed.
