Growing Instructions

Cauliflower is a cool-weather crop that grows best during the spring and fall seasons. Sow the seeds indoors 4-5 weeks before the average last frost date. Seedlings will grow best in cool conditions of 60-65°F. Keep the seeds moist, not wet. Thin the plants to the strongest seedling. After the seedlings have developed 3-4 true leaves, begin fertilizing them every 7-10 days with a liquid fertilizer diluted by 1/4 the required amount. Transplant the seedlings when they are 4-6 weeks old, and they have grown 4-5 true leaves. Harden them off before transplanting. Transplant outdoors 12-18” apart in rows 24-36” apart.

Sow the seeds outdoors 2-3 weeks before your last frost date once the temperatures remain consistently above 55ºF. Seeds planted in cold soil will have poor germination rates. The seeds should be planted 1/4” deep and 3” apart. Plant in an area of the garden that receives at least 6 hours of full sunlight in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the plants to help suppress weeds, maintain moisture and keep the roots cool. Sow the seeds again in midsummer for fall crops. Harvest when the head is firm, compact and smooth.
