Growing Instructions

Direct sow the seeds outdoors after the average last frost date when soil temperatures reach a minimum of 65°F. Seeds will germinate best between 70-80°F.Avoid sowing when temperatures will be consistently above 90°F because it will prevent the plant from flowering.  Seeds do not like to be transplanted.

Plant seeds 1-1 ½” deep. Do not plant the seeds in cold soil because they will not germinate well, and they can rot. To speed germination, seeds can be soaked in warm water for up to an hour. Do not soak seeds longer because they will split or rot. Plant seeds every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest up until 3 months before the average first frost date. Thin when seedlings reach 1-2” tall.

Pole beans require fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Plant seeds in an area that receives full sunlight. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Bean seeds will rot in wet soil. Plants may require more frequent watering during hot or dry weather. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the plants to suppress weeds, keep the roots cool, and retain moisture. Plants can grow to be more than 8 feet tall and must have support.

Beans are nitrogen-fixing plants. Do not add nitrogen to the soil because it will encourage green growth instead of flowers. If necessary, fertilizer high in phosphorous can be used to encourage blooms. Carefully pinch or cut off the beans to avoid damaging the plant. Harvesting the plants often encourages flowering. The beans will also be more tender when picked early.
