Growing Instructions

Direct sow the seeds outdoors after the average last frost date when soil temperatures reach a minimum of 65°F. Seeds will germinate best between 70-80°F. Sow in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 in an area that receives full sunlight. To speed germination, seeds can be soaked in warm water for up to ½ hour. For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2 weeks for up to 3 months before the average first frost date. Thin to 1 plant every 3-4” when they are 2” tall.

Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Plants may require more frequent watering during hot or dry weather. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the base of the plants to suppress weeds, retain moisture and keep the roots cool. Beans are a nitrogen-fixing plant. Do not add nitrogen to the soil. It will encourage green growth instead of flowers. If necessary, fertilizer higher in phosphorous and potassium can be used to encourage blooms.

To harvest, carefully pinch or cut off the beans to avoid damaging the plant. Harvesting the plants often encourages flowering. The beans will be more tender when picked early. Store them in the refrigerator crisper in a plastic bag or a container for up to 1 week. Green beans can be blanched and frozen for longer storage.
