Growing Instructions
Start the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 2-3 seeds 1/2” deep in seed starting mix. Thin the seedlings to 1 per pot. Plants can be transplanted outside when they are 4-6” tall. Harden off the plants before transplanting.
Direct-sow the seeds in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 in an area of the garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Wait until temperatures remain consistently above 60°F. Sunflowers are a warm season crop that are very sensitive to cold temperatures.
Mix 2-3 inches of compost and manure 12” deep into the soil before planting seeds. Fertilize the plants every 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer. Keep the soil moist, not wet. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are recommended for watering. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the plants to maintain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the roots cool. Water the plants deeply once a week, or more often if the weather is very hot. Plants require good air circulation to prevent diseases.
