Growing Instructions

Cabbage is a cool-weather crop that grows best during the spring and fall seasons. The plant requires fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 that is rich with nutrients. Dig 2-3” of compost and manure 6” deep into the soil before planting. Cabbage will grow best when temperatures stay below 80°F.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1/4-1/2” deep per pot or cell. The seeds will germinate best at 65°F. Thin to 1 plant when 3-4 true leaves develop. Fertilize the seedlings every 7-10 days with a liquid or water-soluble fertilizer that has been diluted to ¼ of the recommended amount. Transplant seedlings when they have 4-6 true leaves, and the soil temperature is a minimum of 60°F. Start seeds indoors in late spring for a fall crop.

Sow seeds outdoors in spring when the soil temperature has reached a minimum of 60°F. Sow 2-3 seeds every 15-18” for small headed varieties. Sow large headed varieties every 24-36”. Seedlings should be thinned to the strongest one per planting.

Plants should be transplanted 2-3 weeks before the last frost date. Add 2-3” of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water plants deeply and infrequently. The plants require 1-2” of water per week. The heads are ready for harvest when they feel solid when you push on them lightly.
