Growing Instructions
Direct sow the seeds outside in spring 4-6 weeks before the average last frost date once temperatures reach a minimum of 45°F. Do not plant the seeds in cold soil because they will not germinate well, and they can rot. Plant the seeds every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest until the temperatures begin to exceed 70°F. For a fall harvest, begin planting the seeds 6-8 weeks before the average first frost date. The ideal growing temperature for sweet peas is 45-68°F.
Plant 2 seeds 1 1/2” deep every 2-3”. When plants are 2” tall, thin them to 1 plant every 2-3” in rows 21-30” apart. Sow seeds in double rows 6-8" apart with a short trellis in between the rows. To speed germination, seeds can be soaked in warm water for up to an hour. Do not soak seeds longer because they will split or rot.
Sweet peas require fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5. Plant seeds in an area that receives full sunlight. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Plants may require more frequent watering during hot or dry weather. Apply 2-3” of mulch around the base of the plants to suppress weeds, retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
Peas are nitrogen-fixing plants. Do not add nitrogen to the soil because it will encourage green growth instead of flowers. If necessary, fertilizer high in phosphorous and potassium can be used to encourage blooms. Carefully pinch or cut off the pea pods to avoid damaging the plant. Harvesting the plants often will encourage flowering.
