Growing Instructions
Plant seeds outdoors directly in the garden in early spring, or in the fall. Plant 4-6 weeks before the last frost in the spring, and in late summer for a fall harvest. Winter radishes grow best when planted in mid to late August. The plants can tolerate a light frost, but not a hard frost. Radishes do not tolerate heat. They will become spicy, or woody, and bolt (begin to bloom and produce seeds). They prefer temperatures between 40-70°F. The optimal temperature range is between 60-65°F. Plant seeds every 1-2 weeks for a continuous supply of radishes.
Radishes require loose, fertile, sandy soil in a well-drained location that receives at least six hours of sunlight. Loosen the soil to a depth of 6 inches for round radishes and 12 inches for long radishes. Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting. Do not allow the soil to dry out or the roots will split. Apply mulch around the base of the plants to keep the soil moist and to suppress weeds. Do not overwater or the roots will rot.
Plant the seeds every 1-2 inches in rows 3-6 inches apart. Thin plants 2-3 inches apart when they are an inch tall. Plants can grow 2" to 6" tall depending on the variety. Radishes grow well in containers. You can also plant them near later sprouting plants to mark the rows. As long as you plant seeds in fertile soil, you will not need to fertilize the plants.
Radishes are usually harvested when they are about one inch in diameter. They are typically mature when the shoulders begin to push up out of the soil. When harvesting the plants, carefully dig up or pull them as soon as they are mature. If they are left in the ground for too long, the roots will become fibrous and taste bitter. Radishes can be stored in water at room temperature for 2-4 days, or in the refrigerator in a reusable bag with a moist paper towel for 1-2 weeks.
