Growing Information

Radishes require loose, fertile, sandy soil in a well-draining location that receives at least six hours of sunlight. Loosen the soil to a depth of 6 inches for round radishes and 12 inches for long radishes. Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting. Do not soak the seeds prior to planting. Plant the seeds outdoors directly in the garden in early spring, or in the fall. Plant the seeds 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost in the spring, and 6 weeks before the first frost in the fall. Because of their compact size, radishes grow well in containers. They can also be planted near later sprouting plants to mark the rows.

Plant the seeds every 1 to 2 inches in rows 3 to 6 inches apart. Thin plants 2 to 3 inches apart when they are an inch tall. Plants can grow 2 to 6 inches tall depending on the variety. Do not allow the soil to dry out or the roots will split. Apply mulch around the base of the plants to keep the soil moist and to suppress weeds. Do not overwater the plants or the roots will rot. When you plant the seeds in fertile soil, you will not need to fertilize them.

Radishes can tolerate a light frost, but not a hard frost. They prefer temperatures between 40 to 70 degrees. The optimal temperature range for growing radishes is 60 to 65 degrees. Plant seeds every 1 to 2 weeks for a continuous supply of radishes. Radishes do not tolerate the heat. They will become spicy, or woody, and bolt (begin to bloom and produce seeds).

Radishes are usually harvested when they are about one inch in diameter. They are typically mature when the shoulders begin to push up out of the soil. When harvesting the plants, carefully dig them up or pull them as soon as they are mature. If the radishes are left in the ground for too long, the roots will become fibrous and taste bitter. Radishes can be stored in water at room temperature for 2-4 days, or in the refrigerator in a bag with a moist paper towel for 1-2 weeks.
