Growing Information

Pepper plants are heavy feeders and need plenty of compost added to the soil before planting. They benefit from an all-purpose fertilizer applied every two weeks when planted in the ground, or once a week when grown in containers. Remove flowers until the plant is 18” tall to allow the plant to produce a healthy root system. Mulch around the plant’s base to suppress weeds and retain moisture. To help prevent blossom end rot, do NOT allow the soil to dry out, or root damage will occur. This prevents the plant from absorbing the necessary amount of calcium needed to develop healthy fruits. Provide support for plants.

Plants are very sensitive to cold and frost. Wait to transplant when remain consistently above 60° F. Plants grow best in temperatures ranging between 70° and 80° F. When temperatures exceed 90° F, or drop below 60° F, plants will drop their blossoms. When temperatures are above 80° F, peppers may be small and misshapen. Plants need at least 6 hours of full sun to grow properly. Afternoon shade during the hottest time of the day is beneficial. This helps prevent sunscald and blossom drop.
