Growing Instructions

Direct sow seeds outside in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5-7.0 in an area that receives full sunlight. Wait until the temperatures reach 60°F before sowing the seeds. Sow seeds every 2-3 weeks until early summer. Do not plant seeds near carrots, peppers, potatoes, lavender or fennel. Before planting the seeds, mix 3-4” of compost and manure into the top 6” of the soil. When the plants reach 3” tall, add 2-3” of mulch around the base of them to help retain moisture, keep the roots cool and suppress weeds. Water when the soil is dry 1” down. To help prevent disease, water at the base of the plant.

If you are growing dill for the foliage, pinch off the flower buds before they bloom to increase the flavor. To harvest the foliage, find a tender stem with mature growth. Use scissors or pruning shears to remove the dill leaves from the top part of the stem. Dill leaves can be used fresh, frozen, or dried for later use. To harvest the seeds, allow the plants to bloom and the seed heads to dry completely. Once they have dried, secure a paper bag over the flowerheads to collect the seeds.
