Growing Instructions
Rudbeckia seeds do best when they are direct sown. Surface sow 2-3 seeds every 12-24”. Thin to the strongest seedling. Seeds can also be broadcast to create a natural garden. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days.
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior to the average last frost. Sow seeds 1/8” deep in seed starting mix. Thin to 1 seedling when they develop 2 true leaves. Transplant plants when temperatures are consistently above 65°F. Harden off plants before transplanting.
Add 2-3” of mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture, keep the roots cool and suppress weeds. Keep soil moist, not wet. To help prevent disease, water at the base of the plants.
Rudbeckia can be fertilized in spring and again in late summer. Do not overfertilize. Too much fertilizer will result in few flowers. To encourage flowering, deadhead spent blooms by cutting off the stem. In fall, remove the flower stems, but do not cut back the foliage.
