Growing Instructions
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant 2-3 seeds 1/4” deep per pot or cell. Seeds germinate the best at 65°F. Thin to 1 plant when 3-4 true leaves develop. Fertilize seedlings every 7-10 days with a liquid or water-soluble fertilizer that has been diluted to 1/4 of the recommended amount. Transplant seedlings when they have 4-6 true leaves, and the soil temperature is a minimum of 60°F. Start seeds indoors in midsummer for a fall crop.
Sow seeds outdoors in spring when the soil temperature has reached a minimum of 60°F. Sow 2-3 seeds every 30-36” with rows spaced 36” apart. Seedlings should be thinned to the strongest one per planting.
Plants should be transplanted 2-3 weeks before the average last frost. Add 2-3” of mulch around the base of plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water plants deeply and infrequently. Plants require 1-2” of water per week. Heads are ready for harvest when they feel solid when you press on them lightly.
Plants require fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 that is rich with nutrients. Dig 2-3” of compost and manure 6” deep into the soil before planting. Cabbage will grow best when temperatures are below 80°F.
